Q4U
is a post-punk band from Island. It was active in
1980-1983 and again in 1996-1997. It was started by
Steinþór Stefánsson (guitar) and
girlfriend Linda Garðarsdóttir (voice),
Ellý Halldórsdóttir (voice) and
her boyfriend Gunnþór Sigurðsson
(bass) and Helgi the drummer.
Már was the synth player. Helgi and Már
soon left and Kormákur Geirharðsson took
over the drums. This line-up was filmed for the documentary
Rokk í Reykjavík and recorded three
songs for the album of the same name.
In 1982 this version of the band quit, but first it
recorded a demo with all its material. This demo remained
unpublished for 14 years. Gunnþór, Ellý
and Kormákur continued with Árni Daníel,
a synth player.
This version recorded two records. The first was Q1,
which contained six songs, among them the band´s
most popular, Böring. Q4U was then one of the
most popular post-punk bands in Iceland, and in autumn
1983 it recorded four more songs, which were not published
at the time.
This material did not surface until 13 years later.
When Árni Daníel left the band in 1984
to study history the band called it a day. In 1996
the record Q1 and all previously unreleased material
was released on the CD Q2, which contains 34 songs.
The band supported Classix Nouveaux in 1983.
